Corns are small round thickened areas of skin. A Corn has a center or core of hard material and that is one of the things that makes it different than calluses. Corns can be hard or soft. The hard Corns usually form on the outer surface of the little toe or the upper surface of the other toes. Soft Corns occur between the toes and are kept soft due to the moisture in these areas. The cause of corns can be too much pressure and friction usually from poorly fitting shoes. This stimulates the skin to thicken as a defensive mechanism to protect itself. As the pressure continues it does becomes painful.
Calluses usually develop on the soles of the feet especially under the heels or the ball of the feet. They are usually larger than Corns and are rarely painful. Causes include - poor fitting shoes - can be too tight or too loose, a very high heel. Gait abnormalities - causing increased pressure on different parts of the foot. Toe deformities - such as hammertoe Foot deformities - such as bunions can also be contributing factors.
